The selected grand nursing theory is the adaptation theory by Calista Roy. The adaptation theory by Roy perceives human beings to comprise of interrelated systems that aim at achieving balance and effective response to internal and external environmental stimuli.

The adaptation model by Roy has a number of assumptions. One of the assumptions is the fact that human systems of energy and matter progress into higher levels of self-organization that is complex in nature. The other assumption is that feeling and thinking influence human awareness to their environment and self.

The model also assumes that feelings and thinking mediate the actions that human beings make (Zerwekh & Garneau, 2020). As noted above, the model perceives human beings to comprise of interrelated systems. The systems work to protect, promote interdependence, and effective adaptation to internal and external environmental needs.

The other assumption of the theory is the fact that the integration of the environment and humans lead to meaningful adaptation. Other assumptions include the fact that human beings have mutual relationships with their environment and environmental transformations being based on human consciousness (Fain, 2020).

Roy’s adaptation theory can be applied to research. The theory can be used to examine the factors or variables that influence the individual response to their environmental stimuli. The theory can also be applied to understand the differences in human response to stimuli such as stress in their environments ((Browning) Callis, 2020).

Roy adaptation model can also be used as a framework to guide nursing research. The model can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of different environmental factors on patient’s recovery from a condition and wellbeing.

For example, the model can be used to evaluate the effect of caring patients in quiet environment on the treatment outcomes of migraine headache and meningitis (Gibson, 2020). Therefore, the model has significant uses in nursing research.
